All Fruit Relay

The Howard County Striders had the largest turnout in recent memory for their 4×2 mile all-fruit relay at Oakland Mills Middle School. Runners handed off fruit batons, some of which became pretty messy.

The Rotten Raspberries eventually had to carry their baton in a bag.

Lindsay’s Fruit Dudes took first place, with the Centennial Kumquats seconds behind. The creativity of coming up with a team name was not lost on the Bluher Berries.

RRCA Club Challenge 10M

2005 Club Challenge Overall Results

2005 Club Challenge Team Results (Summary)

2005 Club Challenge Team Results (Coed)

For the second year in a row, the Howard County Striders won the Road Runner’s Club of America 10 Mile Challenge, overpowering eight other RRCA running clubs from the Baltimore-Washington area. In the previous year, the home-town Striders had relied on their older, “more mature” runners and had barely won the Challenge, but this year younger legs handily carried the team to victory. Indeed, only five of the top 16 Striders who scored were over 40. “It’s about time the kids began to assert themselves,” veteran Strider Vicki Lang commented about the youth movement.

The overall winner, Izudin “Izzy” Mehmedovic, illustrated her point. The 20-year-old from UMBC and graduate of Oakland Mills High School had run only one other 10 mile race— the 2002 Challenge Race that the Striders lost. On Sunday, he cranked through the initial mile in 5:17 and then proceeded to leave the rest of the field in the dust. He finished with a 53:20 personal record. Young legs indeed! Izzy had run a 4:09 split at the American East Conference Championship in Boston on Friday night before, then drove home to run a 4:08 mile at a meet in Towson (plus a 1:55 800 meter on a relay), and didn’t get to bed until 12:30 am Sunday morning. Izzy had run a 4:09 split in the Distance Medley Relay at the American East Conference Championship in Boston on Friday night before winning the open mile in 4:08 on Saturday. He also placed 2nd in the 1000 and anchored the 4×800 Relay team on Saturday before driving home with the team (UMBC). “It was hillier than I remembered,” he said about the race.

Anchored by Medmedovic, the Striders placed nine men among the top 20, including duathlete Doug Mock, who out-duelled Craig Morrell from Falls Road Running for second place. The most valiant contribution to the team may have come from Strider Hall of Famer Dave Berardi, who had to pause at 6 miles to vomit. But he came roaring back to chase down the top master runners of Falls Road— Neville Anderson and Pete Searson. “I didn’t have a hang-over either,” Dave said.

In winning the women’s team championship, Striderwomen accounted for four of the top 10 women, including third-place Carrie Selmer, another 20-year-old, as well as veterans Julie Thienel and Robyn Humphrey, who had each earned Runner-of-the-Year honors. Like Izzy, Carrie set a personal record at the 10 mile distance (1:04:49).

Carrie knew well the two women who beat her— Jill Krebs and Diana Pool, who ran with the Westminster Road Runners. The three had met at Western Maryland College in Westminster and still train together. Carrie is taking a semester of from school, Winthrop University, and while she is home she is training with Jill and Diana who were teammates at Western Maryland College in Westminster. Jill herself set a personal record, breaking the mystical one-hour barrier for the first time ever (59:49). She found the course “deceivingly hilly,” but, being accustomed to the environs of Westminster, had little trouble overcoming them.

A total of 328 completed the 10 Mile Challenge. Teams from eight local running clubs competed in Men’s, Women’s, and Overall (Men plus Women) championships. The top 12 men and the top 4 women directly scored for each team, with other club runners serving as “displacers.” The team with the lowest scores won. The Striders won all three championships. Strider President Phil Lang, who has recently become the RRCA Maryland State Representative, accepted the team trophy (“the ugliest trophy in the world”) at a brief ceremony after the race. The top male and female winners received trophies, and all other finishers received the signature “challenge gloves.” There were no other awards, although everyone had bagels, donuts, and Gatorade after the race and could take a shower at the Junior College.

The RRCA 10 Mile Championship is hosted each winter by the Howard County Striders. Richard Bernstein directed the race. Dozens of Howard County Striders served along the course as marshals, at water stops, and at the finish line. The Striders made a point of marking the course and measuring it using the latest global positioning technology, although the nine-mile marker may have been off a little. The Striders wish to thank the Howard County Police for directing traffic at key intersections; they also wish to thank Steve Musselman and the Howard Community College, which served as the host venue for the race.

Resolution Run 8K Prediction Run

On the morning of January 1 this year, 125 turned out for the Resolution Run 8k at Jeffers Hill neighborhood center. They resolved to run, without using any timing devices, the 8 kilometer so as to finish exactly at 11 am. Speed had no merit in this competition, only accuracy of pace.

Over half the field finished within one minute of the appointed hour, but those most precise runner of the day turned out to be Mike Fleming, who crossed the finish line a half second before 11 am. Mike and his son Brian ran the course together and paced themselves. “He was my son-dial,” Mike said. Brian and runner-up Jim Grover received CD carrying cases for both finishing within 2 seconds of 11 am, while Mike earned the grand prize of a gold-plated clock and a gift certificate from Feet First.

The Resolution Run is staged on New Year’s Day each year by Strider emeritii Dave and Judy Tripp. After the race, the prediction runners gathers in the Jeffers Hill Neighborhood Center for orange juice, cider, and donuts. Proceeds from the Resolution Run go to the Dave Tripp Scholarship Fund.

This year the Run Through the Grapevine mysteriously fell on Halloween, and the race featured not only the usual competition but also a competition for the best costume. The catch was that you had to run the entire 8 km (5 miles) cross country course in your costume. Costumed runners who completed the insanely hilly, tortuous course at the Linganore Winery in Frederick County included the 101 Dalmations (only two showed up), Playboy bunnies, the cheerleader, the M&Ms, and the Grim Reaper himself, who also proved to be the fleetest of the costumes. The most original costume was judged to be the Windblown Man- apt for the breezy morning conditions. However, the Stepford Wives, apparently running with Stepford Husbands, won the overall costume contest, although they faced strong competition from Jungle Jim and Jane (2nd costume) as well as the Great Pumpkin (3rd). In the real cross country race, Rick Roundtree took command of the field on the second downhill a half mile after the start and was never seriously threatened. A previous winner of the Grapevine race, Rountree admitted he was moving pretty well and was in good shape. His only problem was the persistent breeze, which held him to a time of “only” 28:43- over 40 seconds ahead of second-place Larry O’Hara. Rick may have been taking it easy, too, because he even had time to notice unharvested grapes still on the vines. “I thought about eating them if I got low on blood sugar,” he joked.

For Jill Krebs, the first place woman, the race was a college reunion. She and her friends from Western Maryland College (Westminster, MD) formed a team that swept the first four places of the women’s race. “We had heard about the hills,” Jill said, who had not encountered such steep, treacherous hills during her years as a collegiate runner. “They were ridiculous!” After the worst hill at 2 1/2 miles, Jill took the lead from her team-mate Amy Pyles and then cruised to the women’s victory in 32:28.

Howard County Strider and Saturday morning bagel runner Dan Laukzemis won the 40-44 age group (33:56) but finished six seconds behind Dave Bollinger (1st, 45-49 men) in the overall masters competition. “I got beat by Darth Maul, too,” said Laukzemis, who complained that Darth’s cape would catch on the grapevines and cause them to snap back in his face.

After a long string of master’s triumphs, Robyn Humphrey succumbed to Kelly Dworak of Carlisle, PA, for the women’s master’s competition. “I hope I run as hard at next week’s road 10k as I did today in this cross country race,” Robyn said.

Like all good cross country races, the Run Through the Grapevine offered team competition, with the top four on six-person teams scoring. A thrilling competition developed between Howard County’s “Coaches Still Doing It” and “Falls Road Running Men.” Roundtree claimed the top spot on the latter, but Howard County’s Jaron Hawkins and Dennis Mickey (a previous winner) team with Howard County Coaches Phil Lang and Trey Cassidy to cement the overall team victory for the ‘Coaches by a margin of a mere three points. The women from Western Maryland College, Team CMAC, clobbered the women’s team competition. The “Old Dogs A” from Montgomery County beat the “Old Dogs B” in the men’s masters teams, while “Sour Grapes” won its fourth consecutive women’s masters team competition, largely because the Grapes were the only team in that age-gender group. (“Is there a fix?” some in the audience questioned.) The principle competition among teams appeared in the open coed division, which had no fewer than 12 teams. The Maryland Track Club Coed easily outlasted the second place “Track Junkies” to win the Open Coed division. Finally,”Aged to Perfection” pummeled “Stepford Wives” in the Masters Coed division, although the latter team had the satisfaction of winning the costume division.

A field of 484 completed the Run Through the Grapevine, which is held entirely within the confines of the Linganore Wineberry Winery in Mt. Airy, MD. All finishers received wine glasses, and age-group winners won gift certificates for wine. Wine tasting immediately followed the race, and runners selected their vintages during and after the awards ceremony. Gerry Clapper and Mark Gilmore co-directed the race, which is in its 11th year. The race is staged by the Howard County Striders, who wish to thank Anthony Aellen for the generous use of his grapevines and surrounding fields. True to form, the race directors tweaked the course once again this year, making it even more difficult. “I don’t know how they do it,” said Dickie George of Aged to Perfection, “but they always seem to find another hill.”

Patty Keating would have won the women’s Metric Marathon (26.2 km or 16.3 mi) last Sunday except that Bea Marie Altieri returned unexpectedly from Florida and crushed the women’s field. “It was a lot of fun!” enthused Bea Marie, who was the fastest Howard County woman when she lived in Columbia several years ago. Ms. Altieri popped up from Clermont, FL, to visit her friend Vicki Lang, and she signed up after discovering the Metric was on the weekend of her stay. In the race, Bea Marie exhibited the same form she had before she left Howard County: she seized the early lead and extended it.

Altieri finished fourth overall (1:43:43) a few minutes behind the men’s winner. Keating never stood a chance and didn’t even see Ms. Altieri after the start. “She could have run the [accompanying] 5k and still had enough time to beat me in the Metric,” a defeated Pat Keating said. Keating and Altieri were the only women in the field to break 2 hours for the 16.3 mile race.

The men’s competition was closer, but winner Jason Tripp really had no problems with the men’s field. Jason surged to an early lead and expected other runners would match his pace, but “nobody wanted to come along.” So he ran the entire race in the company of just lead biker. By the half-way point, Tripp had gotten so far ahead of the runners immediately behind him that, having no one to follow, they missed a turn and briefly went off course. His winning time of 1:39:16 represented a Metric personal record. “I thought I had to break 1:40 to make it legitimate,” he commented.

Known for its hills as well as its peculiar distance, Metric Marathon course runs from the center of Columbia to Ellicott City and back on residential roads as well as bike-paths. The course changed slightly this year, as the finish moved from the old Rouse Company parking lot to the bike path near the People Fountain next to Clyde’s. None of the old hills were omitted, although some of the old Metric hands believe they are getting steeper.

Those not quite up to running the full Metric competed in a 5k race. There, Junior Strider Nicole Shouse (age 13) gave veteran Robyn Humphrey (age 40) quite a scare, but the older runner squeezed out a win in 19:16 and preserved order and decorum in the running world. In the men’s 5k, Jay Sweet outlasted Luis Diaz to win the shorter race in 17:24.

A field of 308 runners completed the 16.3 Metric Marathon, while 130 completed the 5k. The excellent fall weather, sunny and cool, improved the sizes of the fields, and a number of participants registered on the morning of the race.

Overall and age group winners won walnut plaques and gift certificates from Feet First in Wilde Lake. All finishers received the well-known Metric Marathon gloves, a bottle of water, and all the Gatorade and Ledo pizza they could eat.

In its 28th year, the Metric Marathon is staged every fall by the Howard County Striders. John and Ann Worley directed the event. “I delegated everything and didn’t have to do anything!” Mr. Worley said. He was assisted by delegates from the Columbia Clippers swim team, the Boy Scouts of America, and students from various local High Schools. Howard County Police provided excellent traffic control at tricky corners along the tedious route, and many of the runners thanked the officers as they ran past.

“I don’t like being hunted,” said Robyn Humphrey about winning the Women’s Distance Festival 5k last Sunday at the Columbia Mall. Although Humphrey led the race from start to finish, Patty Keating trailed her closely the entire way. Never more than 20 yards behind, Keating chased her through three full laps around the perimeter of the Columbia Mall and finished six seconds behind. “I need a few more weeks of speedwork,” said Keating, who hadn’t run a 5k race in a year.

“My husband told me I should do this race, and if I listen to him I usually do well.” Dorothy Beckett, age 46, enjoyed the distinction of winning the master’s championship (although both Humphrey and Keating are over 40). Given the number 1 bib, Dr. Beckett was really just trying to break 21 minutes (which she did), and found herself in a battle with 14-year-old Samantha Matthews. “Sam would surge ahead, and then I would,” said Dorothy, who eventually finished a few seconds behind Matthews (1st, 14 and U).

A stirring duel also developed between two of Howard County’s most promising young runners, Laura Walls and Nicole Shouse. Walls, a track champion at Glenelg County School, found herself trailing the younger Shouse with only half a mile to the finish, but then threw in a tremendous surge and outsprinted her competition by eight whole seconds. “She went by me ‘whoosh’,” explained Nicole who finished fourth to Walls’ third.

The WDF also featured mother-daughters team competitions. The fastest team by far was “The Fox and the Hound,” which consisted of Nicole Shouse (4th overall), her mother Karen (3rd, 35-39W), and her sister Alyssa (1st, 9 & U). Which was the fox and which the hound was unclear, but F & H easily won the “young” division (daughter 14 and U) of the mother-daughter team competition. In the “old” division (daugter 15 and U), the “Yews” (Calinda and Connie Yew) displaced “Bob’s Babes” (Lindsay and Nancy Burns) as the champions. The Babes had won the competition the last two years, but this time they fell all the way to 5th place ion their category. A total of 28 mother-daughter teams competed.

The race served as the graduation ceremony of the Females in Training (FIT). Under the coaching of seasoned Howard County Striderwomen, this group of women had trained since Spring to prepare themselves for the 5k race. Over 50 FIT women participated. The all-woman race drew a field of 350, making it the largest of many Women’s Distance Festival 5k’s featured throughout the summer. The WDF races began in 1979 to celebrate the beginning of the women’s marathon in the Olympics.

Tacy Feliciano and Pam West co-directed this year’s WDF in Columbia. They enjoyed the support of the Howard County Stridermen, who served as course marshals, at water stops, and at the finish line. The Striders wish to thank the Columbia Mall for use of its parking lot, and to the many Mall merchants who donated an abundance of random prizes. All women 14 and under received medallions, while age group winners received gift certificates from Feet First of Wilde Lake and/or commemorative lucite plaques.

The Howard County Striders finally reclaimed the Road Runners Club of America 10 Mile Team Championship after several years of finishing far out of contention. On a hilly course through the Hickory Ridge and Atholton communities, they accomplished the feat by placing five men among the top 10 men (the top 17 men on each team scored) and three women in among the top 10 women (the top 4 women scored), which gave the Striders a coed team score of 1007. The Falls Road Running Club, their chief competition, came in second with 1150 points (low score wins). A total of eight teams from the local area competed for the race, in which over 400 runners from all over Maryland registered.

The Striders rallied around new President Phil Lang, and they may have also benefited from a new 10-mile course. The course was so new, in fact, the mile marks had not been painted. The lack of mile marks caused some confusion among the runners, especially among the leaders. They even questioned the lead biker about the distances. When the reply proved unenlightening, Glen Mays (DC Road Runners) and Jesse Williams (Falls Road) broke free from the pack “around five miles” and waged their own private battle for the lead. Mays overcame Williams with a late surge in what he thought was the last half mile and went on to win in 52:14, a course record for sure!

The Strider men may not have challenged for the lead, but they included some of the fleetest runners in the area. Runner of the year Mark Gilmore led the contingent in 54:45, one second ahead of highly regarded Tom Williams, who trains with the Bagel Runners on Saturday mornings. New duathlete Doug Mock celebrated his return to racing with a 55:43 and was the third Strider to finish. The next five Stridermen also broke 60 minutes. The final male Strider to finish was Dan Laukzemis (73rd place); he easily beat the last male of second place Falls Road, who was none other than team captain Jim Adams (117th place). Among the 17 Stridermen to score was President Phil Lang (1:02:01), Vice President Jason Tripp (59:22), and ex-President Mick Slonaker (1:02:51). Luis Diaz, in 54th place, also contributed to the cause, even though he started the race thinking “it was only a 5k or a 10k!”

The women’s race belonged solidly to the well-known Lee DiPietro from the Falls Road Running Club. The 45-year-old master woman had little trouble overcoming the other women in the race, and she faced her stiffest competition from Janel Kiley, her own teammate. Finishing 1-2 among the women, DiPieto and Kiley ensured that Falls Road would win the women’s team championship. Lead by Vicki Lang (fifth woman overall) and Julie Thienel (who set a personal record), the Strider women claimed third place among the women’s teams.

The race had eight official coed teams (nine women’s teams) with a total of 398 finishers. Each finisher received a pair of gloves, plus his pick of doughnuts and oranges, but there were not many awards. The overall winners received trophies, and the winning teams received trophies, but that was all. “If you won the race, you got a trophy,” said announcer Paul Goldenberg. “Otherwise, nice job.”

The Howard County Striders stage the RRCA 10 Mile Challenge each February, although snow cancelled the race in 2003. Richard Bernstein debuted as director of the race. Chris Selmer and Brad Speierman measured the new course and hope to certify it by next year’s race. Perhaps they will even mark it!

The Striders wish to thank the Howard County Police for directing traffic. They also wish to acknowledge Steve Musselman and the Howard Community College for graciously providing the use of the gym for before and after race activities. The Striders finally want to thank the dozens of volunteers who marshaled the course and encouraged the runners.
