“I was just trying to break 21 minutes,” Vicki Lang said about her performance in winning the women’s division at the Penguin Pace 5K. “That’s about all that I can do right now.” She need not have been so modest. On a frigid morning (coldest in the race’s history at 20F) and a very hilly course, she had just beaten the second place woman, Lisa Fichman, by 45 seconds. “The last hill did me in!” Vicki admitted, even though she was so far ahead that Lisa couldn’t see her.
Howard County Runner of the Year (2006) Carlos Renjifo handled the men’s competition by a similar margin, beating second place Conrad Orloff by another 45 seconds. Carlos won the race the year before and often trains on the hilly roads of Columbia’s Longfellow community, where the race took place. Immediately after he finished, Carlos went out for a “cool down” run.
The real competition took place among the master runners (over 40 years old). On the men’s side, Stuart Pineo outlasted Martin Goode, who was recently inducted into the Strider Hall of Fame. Stuart usually runs in his bare feet (!), but the cold conditions induced him to wear shoes this time. Among the masters’ women, Lisa Fichman started a few seconds late and found herself chasing Dorothy Beckett up the last long hill on Hesperus Drive. Lisa didn’t panic and overhauled her competitor to claim the master’s title (and second woman overall, too).
This year’s Penguin Pace contained at least two stories not related to winning awards. Drawing their motivation from John Bingham’s “Penguin Column” in Runners World magazine, Penguins from all over the United States have adopted Columbia, MD’s, Penguin Pace as their official race. The Penguins’ motto is “no need for speed,” so the hilly course is custom-made for them. Of special interest to the Penguins was Liz Ittman, who arose from her hospital bed in Tempe, AZ, made the trek to Columbia, and walked the entire 3.1 miles. Just behind her was the Striders’ own Arnat Vale, who completed the course on crutches. He had injured his calf running a recent marathon but would not be denied. “Well, I pre-registered a long time ago,” he explained.
The Penguin Pace said farewell this year to its storied announcer, Miles “The Voice” Weigold, who is retiring to Tucson, AZ. In honor of his retirement, the race retired the number 1 and presented Miles with a framed race number. “We will retire this number and no one will ever wear it again at Penguin Pace,” said race director Arleen Dinneen.
331 completed the Penguin Pace, which is staged every winter by the Howard County Striders. Overall and Age group winners received signature Penguin Pace knit caps, and all participants received really thick, warm sweatshirts in which they could kick back and watch the Superbowl later in the day. Not only that, but all participants enjoyed the post-race brunch catered by the Elkridge Furnace Inn (c. 1744).

In spite of the rainy weather, 137 runners turned out for the Striders’ Annual New Year’s Day Resolution Run, an 8k event in which the competitors vied for the most accurate prediction of their time. Runners simply started sometime after 9:30 AM and tried to finish exactly at 11 AM— without the benefit of watches or clocks.
The competition came down to the steadiness of age against the wildness of youth. In the end, youth won again. John Chall, age 49, finished only 1.99 seconds before the hour, but he lost to 12-year-old Chris Von Rautenkrantz, who finished 1.87 seconds after the hour. John did receive some painter’s gloves for his valiant effort. Young Chris, who had never before even competed in an 8k let alone a prediction run, won a handsome gold clock. “And I ran the whole course just before the run to see what it was like,” Chall lamented.
Of the 137 who ran, 72 finished before the hour and 65 finished after the hour. They may have wanted to finish early anyway to get to the donuts, coffee, and fruit juice at the neighborhood center. Oddly enough, two of the fastest runners in the field, Jason Tripp and Kent Werner, finished nearly last in the competition. For being nearly eight minutes late, Mr. Werner earned a bottle of non-alcoholic cider. “He must have been hung over,” said race director Dave Tripp.
Dave and Judi Tripp organized and directed the popular event. The $5 entry fees raised funds for the Scholarship Fund of the Howard County Striders.
The Resolution Run began and ended at the Jeffers Hill Neighborhood Center, and the course wound along bike paths though the Jeffers Hill and Locust Park neighborhoods of Columbia, MD. The rain had flooded a few stretches of bike path, but the runners did not complain about getting their feet wet. After all, it really wasn’t a race!

“Everybody seemed to know Jason,” Luke Kimmel said about running the 30th Annual Metric Marathon on December 3. From a town near Philadelphia, PA, Kimmel had gravitated to the Metric Marathon in Columbia, MD, simply because he wanted to run a long race in preparation for the Houston Marathon in January. None of the local runners knew him, and suddenly he appeared to be contending with two of the best, Jason Tripp and Dave Berardi, both of whom had won the event in past years. The three found themselves running close together about nine miles into the 16.3-mile race when Kimmel began to run harder. By ten miles he had pulled into the lead. “I don’t know who he was,” Berardi commented, “but he was sure good on the hills.” Kimmel confided that two of the hills were difficult, but he was still able to “cruise” through the final several miles, winning in 1:33:32. “There ought to be a rule against that,” Jason Tripp commented after finishing second about a minute behind.
In the women’s race, Justine Whipple of the U.S. Naval Academy ran so fast that she had no apparent competition except for a few male runners. “She passed me around eight miles,” said a somewhat disgruntled Steve Olenick. Whipple usually runs 10k races and did no specific training for the Metric Marathon. Nevertheless, she held a steady pace throughout the race and beat second-place Kristen Malloy by over five minutes. The race marked the first time Midshipman Whipple had ever run 16 miles. “I liked the hills,” she remarked. In winning the women’s division, Whipple finished seventh overall in the field.
Two local favorites did win the master’s competition, and both finished third in their respective gender groups. Howard County Strider Hall of Famer Dave Berardi actually contended for the lead at one point, but then fell back to finish third overall in 1:35:04. Strider Female Runner of the Year (2005) Robyn Humphrey really enjoyed running with a gaggle of men, and she passed several women in working her way up through the women’s field. “Robyn did all the talking in our group,” George Orlean (3rd, 45-49M) said about her performance.
A 5 km event was held for those not up to running a full Metric Marathon, a 5k. Mike Pfarr of Jarretsville blasted the field with a course-record of 15:34, leaving local favorite Mark Breitenbach to hang on for second. Mark’s wife Katie earned some measure of redemption, however, by winning the women’s division of the short-distance event (19:03).
A total of 311 competed in the Metric Marathon, while 510 ran the 5k race. The 5k field was greatly increased from its usual numbers by an influx of Girls on the Run of Baltimore. Sponsored by Hadassah of Greater Baltimore, Girls on the Run promotes a healthy life-style and self-respect though coaching the sport of running to girls from third through eighth grade. The 5k race provided a supportive, non-competitive venue for the girls to practice their sport.
At least some Metric Marathoners got off to a late start, perhaps because the confused the 8:15 AM start of the Metric with the 8:20 AM start of the 5k. Doug Kuderna started three minutes late, but that only inspired him to charge through the field to eventually claim first place in the 45-49 men (1:46:52). Ronnie Wong, however, claimed to have been using the porta-potty when the race began, could not manage to win back much time, and finished third in his 60-64 men’s age group in 2:08:39. “That’s the worst excuse I’ve ever heard,” said Jerry Warfield, who won that age group in 1:59:21 and was, in fact, Ronnie’s principle competitor.
The Howard County Striders stage the Metric Marathon and 5k every autumn. To prevent competition with major marathons in October and November, this year’s event moved from October to December, where it was originally. The runners seemed happy with this arrangement. Age group winners received large commemorative plaques and gift certificates from Feet First of Wilde Lake. In addition to a multi-colored t-shirt, all finishers also received signature Metric Marathon running gloves.
John and Ann Worley directed the Metric Marathon, which celebrated its 30th birthday. They wish to thank the Howard County Police, the Oakland Mills High School students and the Boy Scouts of America at the water stops, and the dozens of course marshals who got out early on a cold Sunday morning.

“I love this race!” Mike Colaiacovo said about the treacherously difficult Run Through the Grapevine 8k, the mid-Atlantic’s premier cross country race. Mike may have loved the race, but former Oakland Mills champion Izudin “Izzy” Mehmedovic was the one who won the race. Mehmedovic understood the difficulty of the hilly course through the Linganore Winery’s grape-fields, and he also knew the quality of the field, which included Colaiacovo, last year’s Howard County Strider of the year, as well as local standouts Paul Hannsen and Brian Godsey. Izzy stayed behind Hannsen and Godsey for the first four miles and observed them labor up the steep up hills and fly down the down hills. “I know races are won on the uphills,” Izudin said, and he gained on the leaders on every incline. Finally, at the top of the hill around four miles, he sprinted past race leader Hannsen and “crushed it.” As soon as Izzy made this definitive move, Hannsen knew the race was over. Mehmedovic held the lead for the remaining mile and set a course record of 27:49.
In the women’s race, Christine Ramsey took the lead after the first half mile and never looked back. Local favorite Sherry Stick chased her for the remaining four and half miles, but she couldn’t quite close the gap on the former cross country champion from Syracuse University. Ramsey went on to win in 33:47. “That was definitely the hardest cross country course I’ve ever run,” Christine admitted.
Something of an upset occurred in the race among the masters (40 and over) men. With Joe Abernethy at the line, most of the master-men thought they would be racing for second place, but an injury apparently slowed the highly-regarded Abernethy and opened up the field. “I was astonished I was anywhere near Abernethy,” admitted J.J. Sweet, who wound up finishing third among the 45-49 men just behind the local favorite. Into Joe’s void swept Montgomery County’s Mark Hoon, who ripped the masters’ field with a sub-30 minute performance. “I didn’t run this fast last year,” Hoon commented.
Vanessa Cox and Amelia Ingersoll contended mightily for first among the master women. The competition inspired them to both break 40 minutes, and they were the only two over-40 women to crack that barrier. Vanessa ran just a little bit faster and won the masters’ competition in 38:55. “Well, I wasn’t racing against the young girls!” Cox said.
As with all bona-fide cross country races, the Run Through the Grapevine 8k featured team competitions as well as individual competitions. A total of 23 teams competed in six age and gender categories. The Falls Road Running Team narrowly edged the Feet First Howard County Striders in the men’s open division, 24 points to 27 points (low score wins), even though both Mehmedovic and Colaiacovo ran for the Striders. A Falls Road team also won the open coed division. The Master’s Female team of “Sour Grapes” again won its division— the group has never lost at the Grapevine race although this year they faced some stiff competition from Montgomery County’s “Off Roaders.” Teams included a group of alumni from Howard Community College (the “Dragon Alumni’) and a coed group from the Monocacy Aquatic Club. They would have been ready if river swimming was required!
The 8k (5 mi) cross country race took place entirely on the groups of the Linganore Winery in Carroll County. Overall race winners received gift certificates and age group winners received certificates for bottles of win, except for the youth winners who also got gift certificates. Each of the 477 runners who crossed the finish line got a souvenir wine
The race was directed by Jason Tripp and Gerry Clapper. On the Saturday before the race, Jason and Gerry cleaned all 8 kilometers of the course with a rake and leaf-blower, a job greatly appreciated by the runners. In addition, Gerry baked 41 loaves of various kinds of banana nut bread for the occasion. The race is staged each autumn by the Howard County Striders, who wish to thank Anthony Aellen for the use of his winery.

“Don’t fall back! Don’t fall back!” Jen Ecker kept saying to herself to stay close to Sherry Stick, frontrunner of the Women’s Distance Festival 5k last Sunday. Sykesville’s Sherry Stick had taken an early lead in the race with Howard County’s Ecker and Vicki Lang in pursuit. After a mile or so, however, all Ecker or Lang could do was try to keep Stick in sight. “About all we could do was beat the younger ladies in the race,” Vicki recalled. Stick swept on to an easy victory in 18:58— over half a minute ahead of second-place Ecker.
The race among over-40 women turned into a much more exciting affair, with the Strider’s master-runner of 2005 Lisa Fichman eventually overcoming Amelia Ingersoll. “I thought it was hot and the uphills were challenging,” Fichman said. The “really fast women” were so far in front of her that she found herself running alone for much of the 3.1 mile course. “I couldn’t see the runners in front of me, but I could hear breathing behind me!” That would have been Ingersoll, whose 21:41 came up only 11 seconds short of Fichman at the end. Both Fichman and Ingertsoll finished in the top 10 of the all-woman field.
In addition to the individual and age-group competition, the WDF 5k feature mother-daughter team competition. The “Running TV’s” team of Vicki and Tiffany Lang edged the “Hitchhikers” team of Alyssa and Karen Shouse, 3 points to 7 points in the 14-and-under daughter group. Alyssa beat her mom Karen for the first time ever in a race, although she couldn’t quite outrun down Tiffany Lang. Among the 15-and-up daughter group, Colleen, Kerin, and Maureen Thornton beat Christine Trzeinski and Diane Davis by two points for the championship.
The 5k race served as graduation for the Howard County Striders’ Females In Training (FIT). Over 50 women, many of them novice athletes, had been training since spring under the direction of veteran Strider women. All of them finished the race. One of them, Marlene Spence, joined the FIT group at the suggestion of her friend, Lisa Fichman. The WDF was Marlene’s first run ever. “I kept asking myself, how did I get to this point?” Marlene said.
The race began and ended at Howard Community College, which allowed the use of its gymnasium for pre- and post-race activities. A total of 270 women competed in the race, which is held every summer in conjunction with various other RRCA WDF events throughout the country. All registants received a WDF singlet. Overall, age-group, and team winners received lucite plaques and gift certificates to Feet First of Wilde Lake. Nearly every woman in the race also got a random prize— no fewer than four large tables were needed to display these randoms.
The Women’s Distance Festival commemorates the birth of the women’s Olympic marathon in 1982. Many women in the Howard County WDF are also trying to complete all the Mid-Atlantic WDF races and some of them who run on Sunday also ran the Annapolis WDF the day before. “It was much warmer today than yesterday in Annapolis!” said Julie Trapp, who did both races.
Dorothy Beckett and Tacy Feliciano directed Howard County’s WDF. The race is staged each year by the Howard County Striders, who thank their volunteers, the Howard County Police, the Howard Community College, and their many sponsors. The Howard Community Hospital provided major funding for the event.

Paced by its younger runners, Howard County Striders knocked off seven other teams from the Road Runner’s Club of America at the 10-Mile Challenge Race this Sunday to win the Overall and Coed team competition and finish second in the Women’s team competition. In spite of cold, windy conditions and a hilly course, the Challenge proved to be one of the fastest 10 milers in the area. How fast? If you didn’t run the 10 miles faster than 60 minutes you didn’t even break into the top 30.
From the start, the men’s competition became a contest between the Howard County Striders and the Falls Road Running Club. In bright red singlets, the runners of Falls Road formed a tight pack at the very front of the field, and it seemed they might easily win the team race. But the pack fragmented when they reached the infamous hills of the Allview community, and young Carlos Renjifo and Eric Furst went with the leaders. “They’d gap me on the downhills,” Carlos said, “and I’d catch back up on the uphills.” But when they turned into the wind on Freetown Road near Atholton High School, “It all fell apart.” In the final miles, Falls Road’s “Spider” Sillery and Chris Nowakowski drafted back and forth, leaving Renjifo “in no-man’s land” out in the wind. Renjifo and Furst settled for third and fourth overall. Strider Runner of the Year for 2005 Mike Colaiacovo claimed fifth place right behind the youngsters.
The initial pack of Falls Road runners unraveled in the final five miles, and Howard County succeeded in placing seven runners in the top ten and nine in the top 20, while Falls Road managed no more than five. Consequently, the Strider men’s team beat their closest rivals by 51 points— a narrow margin in the race score. The top 13 men from each running club contributed to their team’s score.
Lacking the young legs that put the men’s team over the top, the Strider women succumbed to a stiff challenge from the Montgomery County Road Runners. Montgomery’s Victoria McFarland simply overwhelmed the women’s field, outgunning the highly-regarded Denise Knickman from Falls Road by over two and a half minutes. “The downhills didn’t bother me,” Knickman commented, implying that the uphills and the wind did bother her. The Striders’ fastest women, Runner of the Year for 2005 Robyn Humphrey, ran a spectacular 1:06:09, which was no better than fifth among the women. The Striders placed three women in the top 10, but Montgomery County nevertheless edged them in the women’s competition by a slender margin of 6 points. “Where are all our young women?” asked Vicki Lang, third Striderwoman to finish. The top 5 women from each club scored. The final prize of the Challenge race consisted of the combined or coed team competition, which Howard County won largely on the strength of its men’s team. The overall Howard County team beat Falls Road 854 points to 920 points (low score winning).
The 10 Mile Challenge Race is staged each winter by the Howard County Striders. who have won the last three in a row. The race began and ended at Howard Community College in Columbia, MD, and ran through the neighborhoods of Allview and Hickory Ridge. Richard Bernstein directed the race, with the assistance of the Howard County Police and numerous Strider volunteers at key intersections. The Striders wish to thank Steve Musselman and the Howard Community College for providing their gymnasium as a pre-race and post-race staging area.
The victory marked the first Challenge Race win for new Strider president Len Guralnick. He accepted the team trophy from Mr. Bernstein at a brief ceremony after the race. Jean Knaack, executive director of the Road Runners Club of America, was on hand at the post race ceremonies.
The 2006 10 Mile Challenge Race was not only one of the fastest 10-milers in the area, it was also the largest in a history dating back to 1980. According to official race scorer Jim DiScuillo, 90 persons registered on race morning to bring the total registration to over 450. A total of 434 runners actually completed the 10 mile race.

Carlos Renjifo recently became a resident of Howard County and began training with the Howard County Striders. Last Sunday, he ran his first Strider race, the Penguin Pace 5k (3.1 miles). He didn’t know exactly what to expect and was somewhat startled when David Shah (who came all the way from San Francisco, CA!) leapt from the start with a blazing first quarter mile— all downhill. Carlos matched that furious early pace, however, and the two had a lead of nearly 10 yards on everyone else when they turned onto Hesperus Drive at the bottom of the first hill. Carlos asserted control of the race at that point, completing the initial mile in an amazing 4:45. Shah himself faded to sixth overall, while Renjifo cruised to victory in 16:09. “My second mile was only 5:10,” Carlos related. He left shortly after finishing because he had to teach Sunday School.
The women’s race featured Strider 2005 Runner of the Year Robyn Humphrey, who not only won the women’s competition by over a minute, but also was the only woman to break 20 minutes on the extremely hilly Penguin Pace course. “It was not a strong day for me,” Robyn said, because she had run a race the weekend before and had done a hard track workout on the Thursday before.
In the masters (over-40) competition, Sheldon Degenhardt outlasted John Chall (2nd, 40-49M), although Sheldon’s main competition seemed to be Phil Lang, whom he finally succeeded in beating in the final quarter mile. “Phil ran a marathon two weeks ago,” Degenhardt explained. “He ran out of gas more than I ran out of gas.”
Strider Master Runner of 2005 Lisa Fichman won the women’s masters competition (21:36). “I ran behind Tiffany Lang’s (1st, 14&U) ponytail for the first mile,” Lisa confessed. Amelia Ingersoll shocked the master women by finishing second behind Fichman in the age group. Running the Strider weekly races, Ingersoll had been training on the very same “killer hills” on which the race occurred and she was ready.
If the hills were deadly, at least the weather cooperated. In 2005, a snow-ice storm forced cancellation of the Penguin Pace, so the relatively mild weather (37F at race time) was a relief. Temperatures were so warm, in fact, that many runners wore shorts! “This was not ‘penguin’ weather,” one runner remarked. The favorable weather (if not the hills!) drew a field of 347.
The race was directed by Arleen Dinneen, hosted by the Howard County Striders, and benefited the Florence Bain Senior Center in Columbia, MD. County Executive Jim Robey was on hand at 7:45 am to officially start the race, which began and ended at the senior center. After the race, participants and volunteers feasted on a fabulous brunch catered by the Elkridge Furnace Inn (c. 1744). Participants received multi-colored sweatshirts; age group winners received signature knit caps that proclaimed “I placed at the Penguin Pace 2006.”
