All Fruit Relay
Neighbors in the Oakland Mills Community must have been perplexed watching the four members of Team Dominate speeding on foot through the neighborhood carrying a watermelon. Despite the relatively heavy baton, their middle of the pack finish was impressive. Other teams carried a variety of smaller fruit batons in this annual 4 x 2M relay race.

Clyde’s 10K
When Mike Colaiacovo bolted away at the start of the 30th Annual Clyde’s 10k race, Tom Williams and Steve Moxey remained calm and focused on staying within striking distance of the leader. Their patience paid off. Around the three-mile mark, when the course turned up the infamously long hill on Route 108, they overhauled a slowing Colaiacovo. “I worked it on the hills,” Tom said. In fact, Williams opened up a 30-40 meter gap on Moxey, at which point “I thought I had a shot at winning.” He did, too, cruising the final two miles in 10:30 and winning the race in 33:24. The humid, soggy morning didn’t seem to bother him, but the challenging hills did. “It wasn’t the conditions,” he said, “it’s the course!” [Mr. Colaiacovo may not be blamed for losing his focus during the competition. he just became a new father!]
The women’s race showcased the core of the Howard County Striders’ women’s racing team: Katie Breitenbach, Vanessa Cox, and Robyn Humphrey. Humphrey led ythe three through the first three miles, at which point Cox and Breitenbach assumed the lead. But they were never further apart than a few meters. Indeed, when the trio swept into the West Running Brook neighborhood at the top of the 108 hill, they bunched together and fed of each other’s energy. “It was a team effort,” Katie said, “and it was great to run together like that.” Their mutual encouragements bonded the women together in a tight camaraderie – at least until the last quarter-mile straightaway. “When we saw the finish line, it was every women for herself,” Vanessa said, and it was Cox who surged away from her friends to win the race.
The master’s race proved to be quite interesting. The Strider’s master runner of the year Doug Mock assumed an immediate lead in the age group and seemed well on his way to another stunning victory, and then he suddenly dropped out at 2½ miles. That left Chris Chattin in command of the masters’ field. But his glory did not last more than half a mile, because Peter Keating overtook him on that same 108 hill that claimed so many other victims during the race. When they crested the hill, Keating was in charge and went on to win the masters race. “I’m not as fast as those other guys,” Mr. Keating explained, “and the hills worked to my advantage.”
Lisa Fichman joined Peter as the woman’s counterpart in the master’s championships. In spite of the drizzly conditions, her hair was perfect at the awards ceremony! The overall and masters winners received Clyde’s backpacks stuffed with a jacket and a long-sleeved t-shirt, while age group winners won a Clyde’s jacket and gift certificates to Feet First of Wilde Lake. All registered runners received a commemorative long-sleeved t-shirt.
The 2008 race marked the thirtieth consecutive year that Clyde’s of Columbia has sponsored the race. While there may be races with a longer history than this 10k, there are probably none that can claim to have had the same sponsor for 30 years. And this year’s race marked another milestone: the race “sold out” for first time (we think) in its history. “We achieved 1540 entries the day before the race,” said Jim Discuillo, the official race tabulator, who noted that the field “officially” closed at 1500. Of that number 1366 started and 1325 finished. Some runners were actually turned away before the race because they had waited too long to register.
After the race, Clyde’s of Columbia treated runners, volunteers, and their families to a fabulous outdoor brunch that featured, in addition to the usual bagels, muffins and fruit, sausage rigatoni, bean-chicken chili, a yogurt bar with granola and melons, a huge submarine sandwich (that went really fast), Coke and Powerade, Heinekin and Amsel Light, and delicious fresh strawberries specially flown in from California. Although it rained before the race, the precipitation stopped in time for the race and mercifully held off for the brunch and the awards ceremony.
Clyde’s 10k is staged every spring by the Howard County Striders. The race was directed by Charlie and Ellen Brown for the eighth year in a row. “Keeping a race director for eight years is comparable to keeping the same sponsor for 30 years,” noted announcer Dave Tripp. The Striders wish to thank the Howard County Police, who provided traffic control during the race, holding anxious motorists in check while the runners could move safely around Columbia. The Striders also wish to thank Clyde’s general manager Brent Lomax and his staff for their continued support (and especially the great brunch!).

“One girl went out at a 17-minute 5K pace (which is very fast)” Katie Brietenbach said of the women’s race at Sunday’s 10 Mile Team Challenge race in Columbia, “but she must have been a rabbit because I saw her walking at three miles.” A local favorite from the Howard County Striders, Ms. Breitenbach was at that point running behind Westminster’s Sherry Stick in second place among the women. The women’s pack then entered the hills in the Allview Estates community and, although she held second place, Katie said “the hills depleted me.” As the women emerged from the hills and re-crossed Route 29 near seven miles, Eileen Fleck of the Baltimore Road Runners and Jessica Laurent of the DC Road Runners swept past both Breitenbach and Stick. Katie continued racing as best she could. “I remembered what I was wearing,” namely, the Strider racing singlet, and she managed to finish fourth among the females and scored for the women’s team. All four broke 70 minutes, which was good enough for the Striderwomen to edge the Falls Road women and win the women’s team competition 33 points to 39 points (low score winning).
The men’s race started off the same way as the women’s race, with one runner bolting away to a commanding lead. But as the miles rolled by this guy showed no signs of slowing down. An elite runner from the Pacers-Brooks team, Steven Crane left no doubt about who would win the race. (He did, in 53:27). But Crane was unattached to a team, and that left Falls Road’s Kip Bitok battling Striders Kent Werner, Stephen Moxey, and Carlos Renjifo for second place. “I guess our pack was better than the Falls Road pack,” Carlos said, because the Stridermen carefully stayed together for most of the 10 miles while the Falls Road runners didn’t. But bragging rights for the fastest runner went to Falls Road, because Bitok out-sprinted Werner by one second. “He was taunting me,” Kent said, realizing that Kip (who has run a sub-50 minute 10 miles) might have easily outrun him. (“I told him before the race I was going to,” Kip said.) Nevertheless, Howard County placed six among the top 10 men, and 11 among the top 20, scoring 95 total points, which overwhelmed the Falls Road team (345 points) as well as all the other men’s teams.
With the Striderwomen and Stridermen winning their respective team competitions, the Striders handily won the overall coed team competition with a combined score of 456 points, well ahead of Falls Road, who managed 732 points. The top 12 men in nine teams, and the top 4 women in ten teams scored. The teams consisted of runners from local Road Runners Clubs of America (RRCA). Although the overall male and female winners received trophies, the general awards and the glory went to the teams. There were no age group awards, no random prizes, and no t-shirts. (There were, however, glazed doughnuts and coffee at the post-race ceremony.) A total of 544 runners finished the race.
The Howard County Striders host the RRCA 10 Mile Challenge every February, weather permitting. The Striders won the last 10 Mile Challenge in 2006; an ice storm prevented the event in 2007. Richard Bernstein directed the race, with considerable help from those Howard County Striders who did not race. The Striders also wish to thank the Howard County Police for providing traffic control on a long, tricky course, and the Howard Community College for serving as the pre- and post-race venue.

Penguin Pace 5K

When you not only set a personal record, but also a course record, and also beat the captain of the racing team, you know you’ve had a good day. That’s just what Kent Werner did at the annual Penguin Pace 5k in Columbia, MD, last Sunday. Kent trains with Carlos Renjifo, captain of the Howard County Strider racing team and last year’s winner of the race, and the two even warmed up together before the race. Wanting to keep Carlos in sight, Kent took the early lead and envisioned his adversary eventually passing him. But Kent never saw Carlos at all. “I thought he was playing with me!” Kent said. But he maintained his lead through the first downhill mile, and then through the second moderately flat mile, and then extended his lead on the final, laborious uphill to the finish. “No, I was racing,” Carlos said. Kent wound up handily winning the race in 15:55, the first time anyone had ever broken 16 minutes on the very hilly Longfellow neighborhood course.
The same drama nearly repeated itself in the women’s race. National-class duathlete Marjan Huizing, also a past winner of the Penguin Pace and favorite to win this year, survived a serious challenge from local favorite Tasha Clearman. Tasha spotted Marjan the early lead, but closed to within a few seconds on the last two hills, causing the leader to look back over her shoudler. Huizing hung on to win in 19:54, while Clearman settled for second in 20:04. Tasha might have won except she had run 17 miles the day before. “I’ve never run a 5k before,” she said. “I think I’ll try another one some day.”
Howard County Executive Ken Ulman was on hand not only to help start the race, but also to participate in the event. He took so much heat last year from not running, that he decided “I’m running” this year.
The Penguin Pace sold out with 400 registrations during the week preceding the race. A total of 339 finished. Age group winners received the signature knit caps of the Penguin Pace, while the overall winners also received gift certificates from Feet First of Wilde Lake. All registered runners received a moisture-management long-sleeve t-shirt. After the race, runners gathered in the Florence Bain Senior Center in Columbia for a sumptuous brunch catered by the Elkridge Furnace Inn (c. 1744).
Directed by Arleen Dinneen, the race is staged early every February by the Howard County Striders. The Striders wish to thank the Florence Bain Senior Center for hosting the post-race brunch, and the Howard County Police for supervising the traffic control.

Resolution Run 8K Prediction Run
One hundred fifty six entrants started the new year right with an 8K (4.97 mile) run. The object was to finish as close as possible to 11 am by starting anytime beforehand without the use of a watch. The uncanny ability of runners to gauge their pace was clear by the 100 entrants who finished within a minute of the target. Fifteen year old, Jennifer King, took top honors, just missing the mark by 1/5 of a second.

Steven Crane may have clobbered the men’s field at the 31st Annual Metric Marathon last Sunday, but the story might have been different had not “some young guy” forced the pace for the first 14 miles of the race. Steve’s competition turned out to be a former UMBC runner named Shawn Shorky. Shawn had sprained his ankle a month before and thought he could push through the injury, and he might have too if Crane had not forced the pace. When the ankle became unbearable, Shawn dropped out. Special race coordinator Paul Goldenberg actually gave him a ride back to the start.
A national-class runner, Crane came north to Columbia from Arlington, VA, with his fleet friends from the Pacers running store– Chris Farley and Eric Kean. Crane posted a time of 1:30:38– the fastest Metric Marathon since Peter Dougharty won the event in 1999 with a 1:30:13. Six minutes and over one mile behind Crane, masters runner Tom Banchy became the beneficiary of the withdrawl and finished in second place (1:36:49). “I never saw the leader,” Tom admitted, “But at least I was the first old guy to finish!”
Denise Knickman led the women’s race for the first 13 miles. But when she turned onto the bike path, the uneven, meandering surfaces slowed down her road-race pace. “I had a rough time on the bike paths and couldn’t get used to them,” she said. That gave Alana Van Allen the chance she needed. She overhauled Knickman somewhere on the leaf-strewn bike paths of Long Reach and held on to win the women’s division in 1:51:30.
Among the over-40 runners, the aforementioned Tom Banchy, second overall, was the first master runner across the finish line. He had only run the Metric once before. The fastest woman over 40 was Linda Foley, who finished third among the women in 1:53:36. The second-fastest woman was a grandmaster. Recently turned 50, Dorothy Beckett had celebrated her birthday with a 3:27 at the New York City Marathon, and then felt compelled to run the Metric two weeks later– where she beat nearly all the master women as well as all the grandmasters. Watch out!
The Columbia 5k race accompanied the Metric Marathon. The shorter race is for the speedsters not feeling up to the longer Metric. Robert Santoro traveled all the way from North Quincy, MA (it’s right outside Boston) to win the 5k in a blazing 16:09, while Kensington’s Patty Zerfas bested the women’s field (20:19). Notably, the fastest master in the 5k race was a grandmaster: 50-year-old John Chall finished seventh overall in 18:58.
Although the rain held off until the afternoon, it was such a cold and raw day that many runners left immediately after they finished, including Crane and Van Allen. After the race, some runners actually did hang around Lake Kittimuquindi for random awards, pizza from Jerry’s Subs, and lots of apple juice. “Actually, I can’t wait to get home and take a hot shower,” said Sandy Ford (1st, 45-49W). Those race and age group winners who stuck around received handsome wood plaques and gift certificates from Feet First of Wilde Lake. 337 finished the full Metric Marathon (26.2 km or 16.4 miles), while 216 complete the 5k fun run.
John and Ann Worley directed the Metric Marathon on behalf of the Howard County Striders, who stage the race each December. This year before the race, the Striders held a going-away ceremony for Miles Weigold, announcer and official “voice” of the Howard County Striders. Delegate Elizabeth Bobo presented Miles with an honorary decree from the Maryland State Senate, and he also received a Volunteer of the Year award from the Road Runners Club of America for 2000 hours of service. The Striders also made a donation on Miles’ behalf to the Kennedy-Krieger Institute of Johns Hopkins.
The Striders thank the Howard County Police for their expert traffic direction during the race and the dozens of volunteers (especially Boy Scout Troop 734 from DelMar at the 14 mile water stop) who braved the dreary weather on Sunday morning.

Run Through the Grapevine 8K
Stef Commins had not run a race in a year and a half, and she had not run a cross country race in two years, but she had little trouble dispatching a strong women’s field at the 14th Annual Run Through the Grapevine 8k at Linganore Winery. She bolted to an early lead on past winner Sherry Stick, mastered the steep hills and uneven surfaces, and swept to victory in 33:11. She found herself racing only against the men. Her victory was all the more amazing because she arrived at the race site only five minutes before the 10:00 AM start. After the obligatory bathroom stop, “I was running downhill to the start [while] pinning on my race number,” she said. That was her warm-up. A graduate of the University of Maryland Baltimore Campus, Ms. Commins trains in Patapsco State Park and was encouraged to run the race by her friend Izudin Mehmedovic.
The men’s race proved a much tighter competition. A five or six man pack stayed together for the first two miles of the race, a considerable feat itself considering the difficulty of the terrain. Tom Williams decided he would make his move on the treacherously steep uphill at 2½ miles. “I planned my whole race around that,” he said. Sure enough, Tom’s awesome surge up that hill threw his competitors into chaos and gave him the lead, which he successfully managed for the next 1½ miles. Alas! He made his move too soon. Randy McDermott and Joe Wiegner regained lost ground on the next uphill and caught Williams at the top of the hill at four miles. The three stayed together but fragmented on the final uphill that took them through the grapevines for a final time. Wiegner seized the lead and held off McDermott for the men’s win in 28:25.
In the men’s master competition (runners 40 and over), Phil Lang beat Sheldon Degenhardt by 20 seconds. Phil had run the Marine Corps Marathon the week before (in 2:53 no less) and no one (not even Phil) expected him to run the Grapevine very fast. However, he proved everyone wrong. “Phil was just ahead of me the whole way,” Sheldon related wistfully. “I guess I’m eroding faster than the hills.”
Kathy Bernetti placed first among the master women (37:40). Kathy said she did not fall down, “but the guy in front me did.” She did not help him up! The cross country race also included team competitions: 25 teams competed in seven different age and gender divisions. The fastest team from the Howard County Striders consisted of McDermott and Williams (second and third overall), Mike Colaicovo (sixth) and Sheldon Degenhardt (11th), but they were the only team in the Open Men division so they won hands down. The open coed division proved the most competitive, with no fewer than 10 teams. With Izzy Mehmedovic and Stef Commins, the “College Rejects” from UMBC crushed their competition
The top five of each gender won gift certificates from Feet First as well as certificates for wine at the Winery. Age group winners received gift certificates for wine (except for those who where underage!). Everyone who crossed the finish line was handed a wine glass.
The Run Through the Grapevine 8k cross country race is staged each autumn by the Howard County Striders. Jason Tripp directed the race, but he enjoyed considerable support from Gerry Clapper, who founded the race in the early 1990’s.
