Howard County Striders Wincopin 3 mile Trail Run
3/24/02
Volunteer Nelson Stritehoff wondered "Will we have any new converts to trail running?" Well we just might. A very entertaining and difficult course awaited the 46 brave souls who took the challenge. Florent and Chris literally left the field in the dust as they flew through the difficult course. Kerrie Bowes nipped Laura Walls to win the womens race.

Swansfield ES 2 mile and 5 mile races
3/17/02
Kerrie Bowes and Julie Thienel set new course records for the 2 mile and 5 mile races. This is a noteworthy accomplishment as previous records date back to 1996 and 1997 respectively. Ted Poulos and Anthony Fleg won the men's races. We had a couple of confused and temporarily lost runners. Course markings on the paths have been obliterated by an apparent intolerant Swansfield neighbor. The rain was light but steady.

2/17/02
Windy weather and hills didn't keep them away from the Striders 6th race in the winter series. Although Steve Olenick kept Ted Poulos in sight, he was not able to overtake him for 1st place. Kerrie Bowes, Laura Walls, Melodie & Marquel Bowler, and Johnna Esposito all turned in fast times in the women's race. Weekly regular, Barbara Calvert, enjoyed the social aspect from the back of the pack with Carolyn Frodyna, a friend and newcomer to the weeklies. Seth Brown took 1st place in the men's 10K, with top runners Jason Tripp, and Striders president, Mick Slonaker, not far behind. Paul Keating graciously watched the baby while his wife, Pat, won the women's 10K. The 15K race was won by Doug Kuderna and Kristen Hofer. No one got lost thanks to the great marking job by Bill Arbelaez. Howard County Striders

Seth Brown and Kerrie Bowes won the 2 mile race. Mahmoud Abouelrous was close behind Kerrie for an exciting race. Kerrie's 12:03 finish was a new course record. Dave Bollinger and Ellie Bateman were the 8 mile winners. This is the first time we've run the 8 mile course at Thunder Hill, which replaces the former 15K race. Dave is from Kensington and is a member of Montgomery Road Runners. A few runners went off course. All were eventually found. It rained a little.

Unseasonably warm weather brought out a large crowd. Julie Thienel (19:13 PR) led by 100 meters in the women's race, but was edged out by Kerrie Bowes (19:12) for an exciting finish. The relatively flat course produced many fast times. Jason Tripp was close to Izzy Mehmedovic after the one mile mark, but Izzy surged ahead to win easily.

Seventy-one runners fought strong headwinds. Frequent winners, Kerrie Bowes and Melodie Bowler were the top two finishers in the womens 2 mile event. Ted Poulos, who runs almost every week, won the 2 miler. New weekly runner, Ginger Rowley, came in 2nd behind Johnna Esposito in the 10K. Seth Brown, a regular top finisher, took 1st place in the men's 10K. Larry Cynkin, a Montgomery County club member, came in 2nd. Richard Morgan took 1st place in the 15K. Steve Thienel (3rd place 10K) and Julie Thienel (1st place 15K), more often seen at Saturday bagel runs, performed predictably well. Julie Trapp and Christina Caravoulias usually choose the 2 mile race but upped the ante today to finish the 10K race.

It was rainy and cold. Weekly director, Len Guralnick, and race lead, Jim Carbary, felt a little guilty about sitting in the nice warm car reconciling results while volunteers, Julie Trapp and Bill Arbelaez braved the elements. The Carter family dominated the field with 6 family members participating. Kevin Carter won the race easily. Fifty-nine year old Dad, Dick Carter, ran an impressive 23:21. Kerrie Bowes won the women's race. Proceeds of the race were for the benefit of the Junior Striders.

RESOLUTION RUN 8k - TOP FINISHERS
Jeffers Hill Neighborhood Center - 1 January 2002
The Howard County Striders started the New Year right with a Resolution Run at Jeffers Hill. The race was not to the fastest of the 115 runners, however, but to the most accurate, since the winner was he who completed the 8 km course the closest to 11:00 am without resort to timing devices. Most runners were very accurate as 70 of them finished within one minute of the appointed hour. Jose Costa proved the most accurate, coming within 0.12 seconds of the hour. Jose won a handsome brass mantle clock for his effort, while all those finishing within 30 seconds of the hour received runner's gloves (their choice of white or gray). For being the least accurate (over 12 minutes off), Chuck Daniels won a bottle of warm, non-alcoholic beer.
Mr. Costa did benefit from the excellent pacing of fellow Bagel Runners such as Bill Arbelaez and Daniel Jonas. The three all started the convoluted Jeffers Hill course together about 40 minutes before 11:00 am. Importantly, they all stopped for water, after which point Bill thought they were too fast and Dan thought they were just right. At the end, Jose "slacked off" the pace and wound up winning. "If it hadn't been for that d--- water stop...," groused Phil Lang, who finished one second after the hour (his most accurate finish ever).
In addition to the exciting finish, the Resolution Run featured a post-race brunch with doughnuts and a difficult pop-quiz with questions ranging from current affairs to athletics to the seven presidents of the Howard County Striders (can you name them?). Past president Paul Goldenberg "blitzed" the quiz and also won an award. As they have for the last 20 years, Dave and Judi Tripp directed the Resolution Run. The Run remains one of the most popular and unique events on the Strider calendar. Article by Jim Carbary
