Celestial Way 5K
8/28/02

The Celestial 5K turned into 3.45 miles (measured by Ford Ranger) due to a course direction error, but everyone ran the same unexpected distance, except for Chrystal Hulse (35:01) & Barbara Calvert (41:03), who ran the course correctly. Barbara claimed 2nd place, figuring everyone else DQ'd. Steady rain and cool temperatures prevailed, a pleasant change from recent times. Trophies were awarded to Nicole Shouse and Paul Schoeny, the summer series top runners. Chips, cookies, cream puffs and other nourishment were on hand. Most folks had lots of fun at this last HCS summer race.

Longfellow ES 2mi & 6mi
8/14/02

Howard County Striders held their 6th summer series race at Longfellow Elementary School.
Eleven year old Graham Bazell stayed with the winner, Seth Geoghegan (22) most of the way, but succombed to 2nd as Seth increased his lead.  Ellie Bateman and new weekly runner, Sherry Herrin, placed 1 and 2nd in the women's 6 miler.  The 2 mile race winners were Paul Schoeny and Meghan Bolton. We thank our course painter, Melissa Simmens (16:40), who has recently taken responsibility for keeping us from getting lost.  Melissa is training for her 1st marathon in the fall.

Wincopin Trail 3M
8/1/02

Runners traversed difficult terrain, ducked under trees and ran varying distances at Wincopin Trail. In most cases, the finishing times below do not reflect the order the runners would have come in, had it not been for accidental misdirection just past the 2 mile mark.  We know what happened, and it will be corrected the next time we run this novelty event.  A couple more course marshalls, clearer instruction and some better course marks should correct the situation next time.  I don't think we'll ever understand why several runners decided that crossing the river at some point, heading over to 95 and working there way back to cross the finish line from the opposite direction was the correct way to run this course.

Oakland Mills 2mi, 6mi
7/18/02

A larger than average crowd included many 1st time weekly runners and families.  Nicole Shouse won the women's 6 mile run and Meghan Bolton won the women's 2 mile event.  Alyssa and Chelsea Shouse turned in strong performances in the 2 mile race which may have resulted in PR's.  Even mom, Karen, got to run this one.    Christopher and Brandon Hairston came blazing in together.  Mom and Dad were at the finish line for support and water.  Katie Arcieri,  running her first weekly race, just moved to Columbia and hopes to compete in more HCS events.

Swansfield ES 5K
6/26/02

Bobby Van Allen and Kerrie Bowes won the Swansfield 5K. The turnout was light, partly due to the oppressive heat, humidity and the threat of thunderstorms. But the runners perservered. New strider, Paul Hsiao, ran an impressive 22:20. Johnna Esposito(24:05, 2nd female) and Bruce Worley (24:06) fought for a close finish. Thanks go to Sue Watson, whose course painting efforts prevented anyone from getting lost.
