2 mi. & 6 mi. Events

Many new faces particpated at Howard County Striders races at Longfellow Elementary School. Lance Byrd won the men's 2 miler in 11:43. Johnna Esposito won the women's race. Roger Calvert (11th in 14:31), recovering from recent knee surgery, has been a weekly regular for years and turning in progressively faster times. Janeth Williams won the 6 mile women's race and says her training is going well for her first marathon. Anne Brooker-Grogan ran well on this hilly course at 25:50, but believes she may have run it faster previously. The entire Worley family ran and brought cookies to share in memory of their son/brother, Aaron, whose birthday is August 31st and was a weekly runner himself.

2mi and 6mi Results

We're seeing more families participate at Howard County Striders weekly races during the summer months. The Bazell family was five strong this week at the Thunder Hill races. Jason Bazell ran 18:11 in the 2 miler. Kayla, Alicia and dad Dave were further back in the pack enjoying time together. Their brother, Graham, ran the 6 miler in 43:10 and recently completed his longest run (13 miles) at a recent bagel run. They were not to be outdone by the Shouse's, also five strong, with Paul, Jr. placing 6th at 14:41 in the 2miler. Dad Paul ran the 6 miler. Other family members, Chelsea, Alyssa, and Nicole all competed at the 2 mile distance. Bobby Van Allen could have shaved a few seconds off his win in the 6 miler, had he not gone past the turnaround at water stop. Shades of the recent Meet of Miles event came to mind as Kerrie Bowes came in second, not far behind Dan Laukzemis. New weekly runner, Sean Higgins, raised eyes as he came in 2nd, at an average 6:07 pace.

Meet of Miles Results 7/25/01

Howard County Striders Meet of Miles entrants ran in heats according to estimated times. It appears the runners in Heats 3 & 4 were the best predictors. The first races were fun runs for the youngest entrants. Tola Morakinyo competed in both runs, barely missing 2nd place in the 400M to Mark Calabucci. Evan Good posted an excellent 400M finish time in this field of surprisingly fast young athletes.

Heat #1 produced the most modest runners, eight of which beat their estimates. Many young runners competed with the masters. Ten year old Nathan D'amico (6:22) kept a strong stride and stayed within reach of 1st place TuckYew (6:21). Similarly, 10 year old Jason Bazell (7:23) edged out Dave Tripp (7:25). Eleven year old Kristine Nelson and Jim Turner (66) both finished in 7:33. Adam D'amico (8yrs) and Kayla Bazell (6 yrs) came at 9:04 and 9:12 respectively. Miles Weigold posted an 8:40 and amazingly had the energy to do the announcing as well.

Heat #2 produced an exciting neck and neck finish between Dave Rose who led for most of the race and Dave Rieben who caught him near the finish. Andrew Nard led in the beginning, but probably went out a little too fast relinquishing the lead after the 2nd lap. Dave Rose is training for his 2nd marathon this fall. Frequent weekly runners Karl Kraus (6:46) and John Worley (7:14) both posted fast times.

Kerrie Bowes kept Dan Laukzemis worried in the 3rd heat. Bowes, running a close 2nd, wasn't able to overtake him at the end. Dan said (paraphrased) "I knew with 200 meters to go, what the ---, I better pour it on." Jim Carbary didn't let his poison ivy ruin his day, managing an impressive 5:44. Max Malloy (13 yrs) and Alvin Yew (16 yrs) came in 3rd and 4th. Weekly runner Bruce Worley ran a blistering 6:11. Dwight Johnson, a young looking 58 year old, posted a 6:16 - not too shabby.

Gerry Clapper and Dave Berardi, masters this year, were in the middle of the pack, a testament to the astonishing speed in this group of sub 5:20 runners, which included many Howard County elites. Tunde Morakinyo fell to his knees at the finish after producing a PR of 5:16.

2mi & 6mi Results

It was wet, humid and hot, but 63 runners competed at Howard County Striders Jeffers Hill races on July 18th. Three records were tied or broken by 4 runners. Vicki Lang tied the recent course record set by Kerrie Bowes in the 2 miler. Mike Styczynski shattered the previous men's course record (34:17) in the 6 miler. Sarah Ordaz (1st woman) and Kerrie Bowes both broke the old course record in the 6 miler. Seth Geoghegan won the men's 2 miler. Eric Bell (13 years old) placed 5th behind the older veterans. I hope 66 year old Jim Turner doesn't mind me revealing his age. He ran an impressive 17:15.

Swansfield 5K Results - June 27, 2001

Howard County Striders 5K race at Swansfield brought 44 runners out of their air conditioned homes. As expected, the heat & humidity, present at all the summer series races this year, resulted in slightly slower times. Jeff Olenick has won every series race he has entered in recent months by a good margin. Who will step up to challenge him? Ted Poulos edged out 3rd place Stephen Olenick, who ran close together for the entire race. Kerrie Bowes (11th overall) won the women's race. Many young runners appeared for this Junior Striders benefit. Particularly impressive, was the effort shown by Jessica Esposito (the youngest runner born in '94) and her brother Jacob (born in '92). Both completed the entire 5K distance with some encouragement from coach/dad Joe Esposito. And hats off to grand master runner, Ray Campbell (age 69), who produced a 32:51.

Oakland Mills 2mi and 6mi Results
June 20, 2001

Joe Esposito barely made it to the finish before the thunder and lightning struck at Howard County Striders 6 mile race at Oakland Mills Middle School. The 2 mile and 6 mile races drew the largest crowd so far this year, in spite of the high heat & humidity. The closeness between the slowest and fastest times in both races was remarkable considering the size of the field.
