All Fruit Relay
Oakland Mills MS
5/27/02
The clouds gave way to sunshine for Howard County Striders annual All Fruit Relay, named for the fruit batons ranging from grapes to bananas. The Vikings team from Mt Hebron won by a large margin, averaging a remarkable 5:35 pace. Team Hunt, led by dad, Bud Hunt, finished 12th with the help of his 3 sons. A number of Oakland Mills runners were racing today, due in part to the encouragement of coach, Phil Lang. Steven Olenick deserves credit for running the 1st and last legs of King Cobra's 3 person team and still nailing 3rd place in a competitive race. Weekly regulars, the Bowler and Esposito families, teamed up with Joe Esposito running the final leg. We thank Bill Arbelaez for painting fresh course marks.

Jeff Olenick beat his old course record with an amazing 16:57 finish, an improvement of almost 1/2 a minute. Bobby Van Allen was close behind also beating the old course record. Not to be outdone, Kerrie Bowes sprinted near the end to edge out rival Julie Thienel, beating Pat Keating's old course record by a large margin. The youngest participant, Scott Mantua ran an impressive 27:04. Ed Curtis (20:20) is training for his 1st triathlon next week at Centennial Park. Although many fast times were produced, moans and groans could be heard as the runners traversed one of the Striders hilliest courses. To honor motherhood, participant mothers received Wockenfuss chocolates.

Anne Granger set a new women's course record for the 2 mile event at Longfellow Elementary School. Masters runner, Ted Poulos, won the mens race. Wayne Johnson barely edged out Justin Leidy for the 2nd place spot. The number of very fast 2 miles times are noteworthy on this hilly course. Jason Tripp and Johnna Esposito were the 10K winners by considerable margins. Ages of the runners this week range from 8 to 57. The Striders welcomes all of the new weekly runners.

The clouds parted for the runners during this warm, humid race. Top runners ran closely for the first mile and a number of fast times were recorded from this elite crew. Bobby Van Allen won by a considerable margin. Julie Thienel won the women's race after running a 23 mile training run the day before. Julie is planning on running the Vermont City marathon in the near future. Julie Thienel's time of 19:37 sets a new women's record for this course, beating Pat Keating's 19:52 set in1999. Tunde Morakinyo, recently returning from the Boston Marathon posted a possible 5K PR at 18:28. New weekly runner, John Jagela, Sr. ran an impressive 18:46. John says he's been a "strider" for a while and thought he'd try out one of the weekly races with his sons, John, Jr. (25:42) and Bobby. Bobby Jagela misjudged the start however and was out warming up when the race started. Steve Zelenak says he had just painted the course 15 minutes before he got there. Who would have thought you could paint on water.
