Ted Poulos relinquished his early lead to winner, Matt Skaggs, and 2nd place, Doug Kuderna. Doug was pleased to have beaten Ted for the first time at a weekly race. Second place, Melodie Bowler (22:29), beat her personal goal time by 1 second. Some new weekly runners in attendance included Susan (30:32) and Kristen Hess (30:33), Tim Higgins (20:35), Roger 20:26) & Dallas Wright (25:54), and Lisa Carr (31:39). Ronnie Wong, who has run 4 marathons in as many weeks, including one this morning, ran leisurely to a 28th place finish.

Swansfield 5K
October 12, 2003

Doug Kuderna hung with Ted Poulos for 3 miles of the Strider 5k last Sunday, but the race ended a tenth of a mile further. Poulos used his kick to power past his rival (just as he did at the Metric Marathon the Sunday before) to win in 18:16. "Well, I'm getting closer," Doug sighed. Ethel Guerrero won the women's competition in 26:38. The 5k took place on the hilly (but shady) Swansfield course. All proceeded benefited the Howard County Junior Striders. To treat the runners, Judith Weber brought double-chocolate chip cookies and Ronnie Wong brought pears.

A few runners from other area clubs joined the Howard County Striders for this weeks race. There were refreshments provided by HCS and volunteer, Julie Trapp. Parts of the 10K course were muddy due to recent rain. Doug Kuderna broke his own course record in the 10K race. Marquel Bowler and Norma Walker won the women's races. Josh Tippetts worked hard, but was not successful usurping Ted Poulo's win in the 2 mile event. Eric Bell was justifiably pleased with his PR in the 10K race. Stephanie, Christopher and John Simmens joined mom, Melissa (training for her 2nd marathon), at their 1st weekly race.

Twelve year old, Delvaughn Rooks, 3rd place finish was particularly impressive in this mostly adult field. Not to be outdone, his sister, 9 year old Brittney won the women's event. It's apparent these youngsters have been training hard since we've last seen them at the weeklies. Eric Bell won his 2nd weekly race with his 10K win. Melissa Morris claimed 1st place in the women's 10K. Doug Kuderna and Shannon Costello were the 15K winners
